Jefferson Bourbon Whisky

Posted by 80proof On July - 10 - 2009

jeffersonswhiskyKentucky. Jefferson’s Very Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky. The Jefferson is a very small batch, handcrafted bourbon, which has been aged in the heart of metal clad warehouses to accentuate the extreme temperatures that Kentucky is blessed with, forcing the bourbon to expand deep into the barrel and pull out the prevalent flavors of the wood. These flavors of vanilla, caramel and assorted fruits assure an incredibly smooth taste and finish.

There is no easier drinking bourbon whiskey than this polished Kentucky gold. Jefferson’s is as smooth as it gets.

Tasting Notes:
Nose: Fresh and smooth with velvety peach and vanilla.

Taste: Very soft start, smooth and sweet with hints of berry and citrus.

Finish: Delicate and warm with a return of vanilla, cream and toast.

Russell’s Reserve

Posted by 80proof On March - 24 - 2009

russellsJimmy and Eddie Russell recently realized they had more in common than just their family connection. “Both Eddie and I believe 10 years is a wonderful stage of maturity for a bourbon,” comments Jimmy. In fact, it was Eddie who suggested to Jimmy that they offer a special bottling for consumers to enjoy.

Jimmy agreed and in honor of their joint effort, he put their name on it. Russell’s Reserve is deep amber in color with a nose that is rich in vanilla, oak, toffee and a touch of old leather. The body is huge, and the palate is very spicy with notes of chili peppers, tamarind, almonds and cumin.

This bourbon bears the qualities of a premium bourbon, with a sense strong vanilla, caramel, and malt.
Rated: Russells’ Reserve has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 2000 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Old Pogue Single Barrel Bourbon

Posted by 80proof On March - 24 - 2009

pogueOld Pogue Single Barrel Bourbon, H. E. Pogue Masters Select. Following the Revolutionary War, a few venturesome distillers migrated down the Ohio River. One of their first stops was at a junction with the old “Buffalo Trace,” the overland trail to the south and west. Here in the original Bourbon County, still a part of Virginia then (now Mason County, Kentucky) the settlement of Limestone Landing sprung up. What is thought to be the first distillery in Kentucky was set up in 1890, very near the present site of the Pogue Distillery. With the admisison of Kentucky to the Union, it was renamed Maysville.

In old Bourbon County, pioneer distillers discovered that the Indian corn and limestone water of this region made a product so fine that it was easily distinguished from other spirits.

Ever since, “Bourbon” whiskey, named after the original Bourbon County has been a universal favorite in the distilled spirits field.

While many of the old distilleries have ceased to exist, the original Pogue location still occupies an important place in the traditional industry of the historic Kentucky limestone country.

Basil Hayden Straight Kentucky Bourbon

Posted by 80proof On March - 24 - 2009

basilWhen Basil Hayden, Sr. began distilling his smooth bourbon
in 1796, Kentucky was but four years old and George Washington was President. Today, Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Whiskey is made using the same skill and care that made it a favorite
among America’s frontier settlers.

The recipe for this remarkable bourbon dates back to 1796, when Basil
Hayden himself was a master distiller. Hayden was born and raised in
Maryland, where he learned to make whiskey from rye. When he came to Kentucky, Hayden began making whiskey from a base of corn, but added a higher percentage of rye than other distillers, resulting in a smooth, mild bourbon that was distinctly his own.

Basil’s Bourbon is aged eight years in Kentucky hillside rackhouses, then bottled at a gentle 80 proof. “We take our time in making it and suggest that
you do the same in enjoying it”.

This unique recipe calls for a larger percentage of small grains in the mash (rye and
barley) and eight years gently resting in the wood. During the mashing and aging,
the spicy flavor of the rye marries with the sweet smoothness of the corn for a
character unlike any other bourbon. Enriched by a hint of peppermint, Basil
Hayden’s mellow taste and dry, brief finish is delicious sipped neat or on the rocks. It’s perfect for those who enjoy a light-bodied bourbon.

Golden amber in color, with an aroma of spice, tea, and that hint of peppermint. It tastes spicy, peppery, and slightly of honey, light-bodied, with a gentle bite. The finish is dry, clean, and brief.

Rated: 90 points, Silver Medal Bourbon - Wine Enthusiast

Comments: “Basil Hayden’s is one of the best ultra-premium bourbons that you
can find. It’s a good example of what a classic bourbon is like.
It’s absolutely brilliant.” - Spirit Journal

Bakers Bourbon

Posted by 80proof On March - 24 - 2009

bakersNamed after Baker Beam, grand nephew of the legendary Jim Beam, Baker’s Bourbon is seven-years-old and hand-bottled at 107 proof. Embracing over six generations of distilling experience, Baker’s Bourbon utilizes a special strain of jug yeast that has been in his family for over 60 years. This time tested yeast provides Baker’s with a silky smooth texture and consistent taste from batch to batch.

Color: Warm amber, tawny, nut brown.

Aroma: Fruit, vanilla, caramel.

Taste: Toasted nuts, fruit, vanilla, silky texture.

Finish: Sweet, smooth, medium-long.

Opening nosings detect concentrated, litchi nut, deep-roasted grain scents; aroma turns baked, buttery, oaky and almost brandy-like with aeration. Palate entry is integrated, sweet, and slightly peppery; at midpalate there’s a sweet oak/vanilla rush that backs off prior to the finish, leaving behind taste traces of spirity heat, vanilla extract, cake frosting, butter cream and resin. Evokes thoughts of Cognac, in particular, from the Borderies district.

William Larue Weller Bourbon

Posted by 80proof On March - 10 - 2009

wellerKentucky. William Larue Weller Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Limited Edition, 750ml 117.9 Proof. Uncut & Unfiltered Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

This excellent bourbon is bottled once a year in August - a very limited bottling.

The initial nose impact is full of cotton candy and black walnuts. It develops into luscious dried fruit sweetness that is in perfect harmony with soft vanilla, powdered sugar and cinnamon spices. Upon sipping it starts with a smooth full mouth feel and as it drifts back on the palate -BOOM- an explosion of big bourbon flavors. Oak, smoky sweetness and candied fruit dance across your tongue. This quaff is not without heat as it warms the senses without flame. It’s a hearty drink, but the finish is very fresh and invigorating. It takes a back seat to none.

Wine Enthusiast: Deep bronze hue. Mature aromas of lanolin, almond oil and creamed corn greet the olfactory sense; aeration unleashes full-throttle scents of toasty oak and vanilla extract: a top-notch Bourbon bouquet. Palate entry is dry, complex and toasty; midpalate offers sweet, grainy tastes of Wheat Thins, oil and sap. Aftertaste is oaky, sweet and intensely grainy. Another Weller triumph.

Score: 100 - Wine Enthusiast.
