Similar to the colorful Sam Houston, first president of the Republic of Texas, this bourbon is full of character. The high percentage of rye in the mash bill gives this bourbon its spicy character. Combined with a deep char, this expressive whiskey is robust yet elegant.

Jimmy and Eddie Russell recently realized they had more in common than just their family connection. “Both Eddie and I believe 10 years is a wonderful stage of maturity for a bourbon,” comments Jimmy. Old Pogue Single Barrel Bourbon, H. E. Pogue Masters Select. Following the Revolutionary War, a few venturesome distillers migrated down the Ohio River. One of their first stops was at a junction with the old “Buffalo Trace,” the overland trail to the south and west. Here in the original Bourbon County, still a part of Virginia then (now Mason County, Kentucky) the settlement of Limestone Landing sprung up. What is thought to be the first distillery in Kentucky was set up in 1890, very near the present site of the Pogue Distillery. With the admisison of Kentucky to the Union, it was renamed Maysville.

In old Bourbon County, pioneer distillers discovered that the Indian corn and limestone water of this region made a product so fine that it was easily distinguished from other spirits.

Whiskey is made using the same skill and care that made it a favorite
among America’s frontier settlers.

The recipe for this remarkable bourbon dates back to 1796, when Basil
Hayden himself was a master distiller. Hayden was born and raised in
Maryland, where he learned to make whiskey from rye. When he came to Kentucky, Hayden began making whiskey from a base of corn, but added a higher percentage of rye than other distillers, resulting in a smooth, mild bourbon that was distinctly his own.

Basil’s Bourbon is aged eight years in Kentucky hillside rackhouses, then bottled at a gentle 80 proof. “We take our time in making it and suggest that
you do the same in enjoying it”.

This unique recipe calls for a larger percentage of small grains in the mash (rye and
barley) and eight years gently resting in the wood. During the mashing and aging,
